Indie rockers gone solo
Whatever it is that Tim Hecker does
Bands that have the word “Mountain” in them

Great conversation with my wife from RubyConf
Crystal: I hope you have a real nice evening.
crnixon@gmail.com: Thanks. I'm going to dinner soon.
crnixon@gmail.com: There are a lot of Japanese people here.
Crystal: I'm going to figure out something to eat, myself.
Crystal: Really?
crnixon@gmail.com: The creator of Ruby is Japanese. It's very popular there.
Crystal: Aha!
Crystal: Who's the creator of the "On Rails" part?
crnixon@gmail.com: David Heinemeier Hansson
Crystal: Every time you say/type creator, I think "Kraaator".
Crystal: Ah, the cute one?
crnixon@gmail.com: Yes,
crnixon@gmail.com: KRAATOR!
Crystal: I wanna play duel of ages!
crnixon@gmail.com: I have to go to dinner now! I want to play DOA too
Crystal: Okay, bye!

Road school
In my dream life, when our oldest kid turns 5, we’ll get rid of most of our possessions, sell our house, and buy an RV. We’ll put an antenna for Internet access on the top. We’ll get in and drive around the continent for the next five years. I’ll get up early in the morning and work as a freelance developer for 4 hours a day. I’ll probably hire an assistant overseas,...

Re-evaluation
About a year ago I sat down with Crystal and wrote out my life goals. I’m having a hell of a rough month, so I decided to re-read them to give me some hope. I thought I’d share.
2 year goals (Age 30-32)
May: Fix roof. Done!
September: Furnish backyard for fall. Yeah, missed that one, but working on it.
Cheer Crystal on for a marathon! Done!

Religion in American Culture -- Pew Forum on... →
This is by far the most interesting thing I’ve seen on the web in the last 3 years. It also gives me serious hope for the future. It shows what I’ve thought for a while: that we only hear the most vocal voices of religion, but that most religious people are way more moderate, accepting, and understanding in their beliefs than they are normally portrayed.

Crystal and I had a great Friday night. We had reservations for a fancy dinner at Piedmont in Durham, which I just realized posts its daily menu through Blogger. I had the “spring vegetable risotto with baby fennel, asparagus, artichokes, peas & goat cheese” and Crystal had “fresh tagliatelle with local peas, prosciutto, truffle butter & parmesan.” Both were richly...

Music for Cold Days →
This looks like the last cold day of the season in Durham. I’ll miss gray skies and cold fingers.
Yesterday was exhausting. I got up at 4am, drove from DC to Durham, worked a full day, met Crystal, bought a new car, drove home twice — once in my old car, once in my new — and then made Chinese soup out of a bottle of ketchup and some soy sauce. That turned out better than it sounds. Crystal was as tired as I.
I was so sweaty and greasy and plain horrible feeling that I took a...

I am amazed at the forethought and leadership Durham’s city council have had in this situation. It’s smart and brave of them to only reduce restrictions slightly, and make a plan for the future.

As a guy that’s lived among Christians, and still carries some lessons from those experiences, I have to say that I love these guys. “An Economy Stimulating Giving Spree” is another fantastic article on the subject of giving. The Jesus talk still makes me nervous; but, people who are invested in actually humbly helping one another make me hopeful.

Overheard in our bedroom
Me: (looking at Netflix email) Hey, we get Monk tomorrow.
Crystal: You're a monkey.
Me: Did you just say "you're a monkey"?
Crystal: Don't be calling me a monkey!
I am married to a comic genius
This email awaited me when I got to work this morning:
I meant to mention to you this morning that there is a bunch of crap inside the oven — knives, towels, plastic tray, cookware, etc. I put these things in there to hide our unwashed dishes from our unsuspecting guests yesterday evening. The reason I am telling you this is because I thought you might turn on the oven to preheat it for...

Fed dogs; went to work; still in love
It’s tempting not to write about things are aren’t exceptional; but, when every day is good, the things that are the same every day are worth celebrating, too.
Crystal’s blogged about this, already: we have a second dog named Eli. He is growing on me. He is actually a super dog, but he is sort of a catalyst to Charlie. Apart, they are very well-mannered. Together, they turn into...
